Placenta comes from the Greek word that means flat cake, connotating an edible aspect to the organ. Many people eat placenta. Is this acceptable, naturalized cannibalism? Made out of bioplastics, the work is ephemeral and is in constant decay. It is an artwork until the mold growing out of the agar, starch and other edible materials produces an unbearable, corpse-like smell. Only then, it becomes trash. PLAcenTE of CAKE explores the porous membranes between the edible and the inedible; between the appetizing and the revolting; between the living and the dying; between the needed and the discarded; ultimately between consumption, exploitation, discarding, caring and celebration of the womb, the female body and life.
