ARTIST STATEMENT

My concentration surrounds the complex relationships between myself, others around me, and the world I live in. As I metamorphosed from girlhood into womanhood, I was intrigued by the dynamic interplay of Chinese-Canadian cultures, femininity, and the inconstancy of life that carved my identity. Each conversation and interaction with other individuals elicit new emotions and novel concepts. I sought to explore this ever-changing world and document my swiftly shifting perspective through art, capturing fleeting thoughts into immobile mediums. Art circumvents language and is my way of thinking and voicing out my inner reflections to the world.

My concentration works begin with self-reflection on my identities. In an attempt to capture my physical and psychological changes during adolescence, I studied female anatomy autonomously while investigating cellular communication in AP Biology and AP Psychology. Connecting scientific investigation with experimental mediums, I created the series of mixed media sculptures “flower womb”.

I then seek to express my reflections by eliciting emotions with unconventional artistic expressions. “upupdowndown” combines mobile sculpture with digital video projection, while “love?” is a mélange of mixed media sculpture, performance, and video art. The concepts of these artworks all sprout from my interactions with other people, from listening to love stories to going through difficult times together.

“me, others, and the universe” sums up my concentration: to explore life and record my experience. Based on my thinking, influences from various academic disciplines, and experimentation of diverse artistic expressions, my art is personal in theme yet provides a candid space for the viewers to reflect and resonate with my inner world.
